How To Become Aware Of Your Cultural Conditioning
In this post, we will try to pierce through layer upon layer of mental noise, to become aware of your cultural conditioning. I should remind you though, that you are most probably already aware of some of the coarser conditioning.
It is true to say that stress, restlessness and impatience block the ability to see clearly. Therefore, if you are of a restless nature, work on yourself whenever you feel centered and at ease.
Any reflections like this require a willingness to explore your inner world, or phrased differently, a willingness to explore your feelings and thoughts.
The way we will go about it, is first by comparing what the cultural conditioning was like hundreds of years ago, with how it is today. That will raise your awareness and stimulate your curiosity. Then, you will be asked a number of specific questions.
As usual, the more often you come back to the article and reflect on its statements and questions, the more progress you will make.
Before we start, what is cultural conditioning and what are the benefits of transcending it? Here is a link to an article that clearly explains the ins and outs of cultural conditioning.

Cultural Conditioning Hundreds Of Years Ago
Take some time to contemplate the following section. Read slowly and pause whenever needed.
How was the cultural conditioning different hundreds of years ago, prior to the industrialization? Let's take a close look at it.
The modes of transport were slow and the infrastructure was very poor. As it were, most people traveled on foot, by horse, horse and carriage or ship. As a result of the limited possibilities, not many traveled long distances. It was also an expensive and potentially dangerous undertaking.
Without cars, trains and planes, it was rare to go to new places. For this reason, the people were exposed to few new impressions. As you know, when you travel you may visit new countries, try new foods and see how people live. That, directly conditions your way of thinking.
What is more, without newspapers, phones, radio, tv and the internet, they hardly knew anything about what was going on in the world. One could say, that their world was made up of their community and the neighboring villages.
Without electricity it gets really dark at night, no wonder they were superstitious and afraid of wild animals. How comfortable could it be to live without electricity and running water. These discomforts conditioned how they looked at life.
Most of them lived in the countryside and put in long hours on farms.
Further, imagine knowing every single person in your village by first and last name. This conditions how you perceive the folks around you.
Did they value the limited noise and air pollution, or were they unaware of it?
How many people owned books and knew how to read?
Some were fortunate to learn to read and write, while a select few were given privileges by kings and became powerful and wealthy.
Was there any justice, at all?
How did the church or temples treat the people? Were they forced to attend the religious services? How would that make you feel?
Women nowhere near had the same status in society as men, which had a major impact on cultural conditioning.
Since the culture and technology didn't change much over a hundred years, most things remained the same. The conditioning was greatly affected by that as well.
Picture a world without celebrities, fast food and shopping malls, a world without insurance companies, plastic and space tourism.
Moreover, imagine a world without contraceptives. How would that affect the conditioning?
At that time, the external conditions were vastly different from today, the hardship fueled hopelessness and frustration. In combination with the fact that the parents didn't know better, they beat their children; thus, most of them were afraid of their parents. That, had a truly negative impact on their cultural conditioning, which was passed down from generation to generation. Will this transmission ever be broken?
